Edith Olson
Scottish by birth and Canadian by choice, Edith has an honours degree in Soil Science from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland (1983). She came to Canada in 1986 and after a few years with Agriculture and Agri-food Canada went to the University of Alberta and completed a PhD in Water and Land Resources (2004). She says she graduated from the U of A twice – just different countries.
It was at the U of Alberta that she started teaching, first as a TA for the soils labs in Renewable Resources, then as an instructor for Soil Resources, Faculty of Extension. While at the U of Alberta, she was awarded the Graduate Teaching Award from the Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Home Economics (2001) and the Graduate Student Teaching Award of Merit from the National Association of Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (2001). Edith was hired to an instructor position at Lethbridge College in 2002 and has been here ever since. After one year in the role she was awarded Rookie of the Year (2003), and a few years later the Lethbridge College Faculty Association/Students Associate Teaching Excellence Award (2007).
Edith has taught classes in Upgrading, Agriculture and Environmental Sciences and has held the positions of instructor, chair and interim dean. She has also taught part-time at the University of Lethbridge in Geography and Economics. When not teaching she enjoys analyzing data generated from research into aquaponics here at Lethbridge College. Edith joined the Alberta Institute of Agrologists in 2009 and is currently the secretary/treasurer of the local branch. She is treasurer of the Canadian Society of Soil Science and member of the CSSS Education Sub-Committee.
